Japan's government announced Thursday the conclusion of a week-long campaign urging caution for a potential 'megaquake,' following a period without abnormal seismic activity. The campaign followed a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on August 8.
The Japan Meteorological Agency's advisory came due to heightened risks along the Nankai Trough. Officials call for ongoing preparedness despite the end of the caution period.
Over 700 municipalities reviewed their emergency plans, and many residents stocked up on essentials, altering travel and community events. Seismologists note a 70-80% chance of a megaquake within 30 years, stressing continued vigilance.
