Bihar's government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has announced an ambitious plan to expand the state's rural road network, aiming to construct or upgrade 10,000 kilometers of roads by the 2025 state assembly elections.
Ashok Choudhary, Minister of the Rural Works Department (RWD), emphasized that this initiative aligns with Kumar's commitment to enhancing rural infrastructure. Alongside this, 5,000 kilometers of new roads will be built in newly settled rural areas, focusing on equitable and inclusive development.
Responding to recent bridge collapses in the state, Choudhary noted that some structures were either non-operational or in need of maintenance. The RWD is surveying all small bridges in Bihar to identify those requiring repairs, with findings expected by August 15. A high-level inquiry has been initiated following the collapse of a 182-meter bridge over the Bakra River in Araria district on June 18 to investigate the quality of construction materials used.
