At least 57 people have been confirmed dead after massive landslides, triggered by relentless heavy rains, struck Wayanad on Tuesday. Hundreds remain trapped beneath the debris, sparking fears of increasing fatalities. Rescue agencies are racing against time to locate and save any survivors.
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and former Wayanad MP, reported in Parliament that the death toll could exceed 70. The landslides occurred in the early hours, catching sleeping villagers off-guard and turning picturesque hamlets into scenes of devastation.
Rescue teams comprising the Army, Navy, and NDRF are braving rough weather to find survivors. Multiple agencies are working in tandem to deliver critical assistance. The Kerala government has sought additional help from Defence forces to bolster rescue operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have assured full support from the central government.
