North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the flooded areas near the country's border with China on Sunday, following record torrential rain that affected 5,000 people, state media KCNA reported on Monday.

According to KCNA, the military organized around 10 planes to make roughly 20 trips each to rescue 4,200 people within about a half-day. Kim praised the military for its efforts, stating that they saved 5,000 lives, but he criticized officials for their lack of sufficient preparation in crisis response measures to prevent damage from heavy rains, floods, and typhoons.

The recent heavy rainfall, caused by Tropical Storm Gaemi, has also led to a rain-triggered landslide in southern China that killed 12 people and has caused flash floods in other areas.
