Amid the mounting threat of climate change, Meghalaya is making strategic moves to safeguard its green cover and natural resources. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced an ambitious forest conservation scheme backed by a significant climate budget as part of a revised State Action Plan for Climate Change (SAPCC).

Meghalaya has allocated 16% of its 2024-25 state budget, amounting to Rs 4,501 crore, for sustainability and conservation initiatives. This is a substantial increase from previous years, reflecting the state's commitment to combat climate change. Sangma emphasized the importance of involving local communities in these initiatives, citing the successful 'Green Meghalaya' program where communities receive annual grants for forest conservation.

The state is also exploring water management strategies, given its unique geographical challenges. Efforts to map springs and create check dams are part of the broader strategy to ensure water retention and supply. Additionally, Meghalaya's linkage with the international carbon market aims at further forest conservation, while new projects under the Meghalaya State Organic Mission target sustainable agriculture through organic farming.
