As heavy rains lashed several parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an orange alert for three northern districts of the state.

The IMD issued orange alerts in Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, and a yellow alert in nine other districts for the day.

The department also predicted thunderstorms with moderate rainfall and gusty winds in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam. From June 14 to June 16, Malappuram will also be under an orange alert.

Kerala is expected to receive widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days due to cyclonic circulation over north Gujarat and the Bay of Bengal.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has cautioned against standing or parking under trees due to the risk of uprooting and breaking branches. They advised those in insecure housing to relocate to safer buildings.

The IMD also warned fishermen in Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coastal areas against venturing into the sea due to the likelihood of bad weather and strong winds from June 13 to June 17. The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) corroborated this, warning of high waves and storm surges along Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts.
