Minister Barbara Creecy of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has announced the publication of a revised Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for Black and White Rhino in South Africa. This notification, detailed in the Government Gazette, aims to solicit public feedback on strategic conservation efforts for rhinos across the country.

The BMP for Black and White Rhino intends to integrate existing policies and planning efforts into a comprehensive framework. This approach seeks to foster a unified strategy that encompasses all stakeholders, emphasizing both rhino conservation and societal interests.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Department highlighted the significance of the revised BMP: "The revision of the BMP consolidates previous work done at policy and planning level on rhino management into a single integrated tool in order to usher in a whole-of-society approach in the interest of both the rhinos and the people of South Africa."

The notice published in the Government Gazette falls under section 46 of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, 2004 (Act No. 10 of 2004), initiating a 30-day period for public comment and submissions. Members of the public are encouraged to provide written representations or objections regarding the BMP revision.

Representations can be submitted via post to the Director General, Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, attention Ms. Humbulani Mafumo, at Private Bag X447, Pretoria, 0001. Alternatively, submissions can be delivered by hand to Environment House, 473 Steve Biko Road, Arcadia, Pretoria, 0083, or emailed to conservationmanagement@dffe.gov.za.

This public consultation process underscores South Africa's commitment to inclusive and transparent environmental governance, inviting citizens to contribute to the sustainable management and conservation of the country's rhino populations.
