In an effort to strengthen security in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, police have initiated a recruitment drive for Special Police Officers (SPOs) from 22 villages heavily impacted by militancy.

This strategic move comes after Director General of Police (DGP) R R Swain announced plans to enhance village defense groups and SPOs in Jammu and Kashmir.

On Friday, the DGP recognized the bravery of nine Special Police Officers who played a critical role in assisting security forces to neutralize two terrorists in Kathua's Hiranagar area.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajouri, Amritpal Singh, stated, ''Applications are invited from eligible male candidates residing in the 22 militancy-affected villages of Rajouri district for engagement as Special Police Officers in J&K Police, with a monthly honorarium.''

This recruitment drive targets various villages, including Azmatabad, Bangahai, Shahadara, Dhara-Mangota, Lah, among others. The application deadline is set for July 9.

Officials highlighted that the aim of this initiative is to closely monitor the movements of terrorists who have been active in the region for over a year.

Several terror-related incidents have been reported in the Poonch-Rajouri-Reasi belt over the past two years. The most recent attack occurred on June 12 in Reasi, where a terrorist ambush on a bus resulted in nine fatalities and 41 injuries.
