Odisha's top political figures have taken a stand against participating in New Year festivities this year. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida have opted for a subdued approach in light of significant recent events.
The Odisha Chief Minister's Office conveyed on X that Majhi would abstain from official celebrations in respect of a seven-day national mourning declared following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. This decision also acknowledges the hardships of farmers who have suffered crop losses due to unexpected rains.
Majhi appealed to his supporters to refrain from gifting flowers or diaries as he steps back from the usual New Year customs. Parida echoed similar sentiments, confirming that she too will shun any personal or official celebratory programs.
