Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed optimism about reconciling with Syrian President Bashar Assad in hopes of resolving over a decade of hostilities between the neighboring nations. His statements were reported by state media on Wednesday.
Erdogan mentioned that normalizing ties could stabilize Syria and maintain its territorial integrity. He communicated these views to journalists following diplomatic visits to Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. The conflict between the two countries started with Syria's civil war when Turkey supported insurgents aiming to oust Assad, which led to Syria accusing Turkey of destabilizing the region.
In recent years, Turkey has pursued reconciliation, mainly to tackle security risks from Kurdish militant groups and aid in the return of Syrian refugees. Despite Russian efforts to mediate, progress in restoring diplomatic ties has stalled. Erdogan retains hope, denouncing organizations like the PKK as threats to Syria's sovereignty, and highlighting the need for peace amid wider regional tensions.
