Gambegre in Meghalaya reported an impressive voter turnout of 67.8% by mid-afternoon during its crucial by-election, an election official confirmed. The voting commenced at 7 AM under stringent security conditions and is expected to conclude by 4 PM.
Long queues of voters were noted across polling stations, reflecting heightened enthusiasm. Meghalaya's Chief Electoral Officer, BDR Tiwari, remarked on the increasing momentum of voting with reports of substantial queues.
The by-election features several prominent candidates, including Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma's spouse, Mehtab Chandee Sangma, running on an NPP ticket. This election follows the vacancy left by MLA Saleng A Sangma's shift to the Lok Sabha.
