Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced sharp criticism from Congress on Tuesday over his handling of critical issues in Maharashtra, as the political battle in the state heats up ahead of polls. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned BJP's efforts to tackle farmer suicides and asked about the perceived dilution of Adivasi forest rights.
Ramesh highlighted that the Forest Rights Act, initiated by Congress in 2006, intended to grant legal autonomy to Adivasis over forest management, is allegedly obstructed by the current administration, leaving millions without expected benefits. Details emerged that only 52% of claims filed have been granted, reflecting slow progress.
Addressing water crises, with shortages in regions like Solapur and Satara worsening, Ramesh challenged the lack of effective governmental response. He also brought attention to the disturbing statistic of farmers committing suicide, urging the BJP to present a concrete vision supporting Maharashtra's agricultural sector.
