On New Year's Day, two devastating incidents involving vehicles rented through Turo, a peer-to-peer car sharing platform, captured national attention. In New Orleans, a pickup truck attack claimed the lives of 14 people celebrating in the French Quarter. The perpetrator, identified as Army veteran Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, was killed by police.
Hours later, outside President-elect Donald Trump's Las Vegas hotel, a Tesla Cybertruck exploded. The incident involved Green Beret Matthew Livelsberger, who died from a gunshot wound and the subsequent explosion. Despite both vehicles being rented via Turo, the FBI found no direct link between the attacks.
Turo expressed grief over the incidents, stating its commitment to assisting authorities. Founded in 2010 and rebranded in 2015, Turo operates globally, allowing car owners to rent their vehicles to nearby drivers. Investigations continue, with no criminal history detected for the renters involved in the tragedies.
