Mahama Leads in Polls for Ghana's Key Presidential Race
In Ghana's forthcoming presidential election, opposition leader John Dramani Mahama appears poised to win against ruling party candidate Muhamudu Bawumia. Concerns over the economy, jobs, and infrastructure are influencing voter sentiment. A tight race is expected, with predictions favoring a potential close contest or run-off.
John Dramani Mahama, Ghana's main opposition leader, is leading in the polls for the upcoming presidential election set for December. An opinion poll published on Monday indicates Mahama is ahead of the ruling party's candidate, Vice President Muhamudu Bawumia.
The Accra-based Global InfoAnalytics reports Mahama capturing 52% of the vote, with Bawumia garnering 41.3%. The race is focused on economic issues, education, and infrastructure. Mahama's infrastructure investments during his previous term are remembered despite economic instability and corruption allegations, though he was never directly charged.
Both contenders promise economic recovery plans. Ghana recently defaulted on its debt and received a $3 billion IMF bailout under President Nana Akufo-Addo's administration, ending in January. Analysts anticipate a tight race, with some forecasting a possible run-off.
