Republicans Near Control of U.S. House
Republicans are close to securing control of the U.S. House of Representatives, essential for President-elect Donald Trump's agenda. They have won 212 seats, needing six more for a majority, and have already secured the Senate. Ongoing vote counts will determine 19 unresolved House races.
Republicans on Saturday seemed on the brink of securing control of the U.S. House of Representatives, which is pivotal for President-elect Donald Trump to advance his agenda upon his return to the White House in January.
As votes from the November 5 general election continue to be counted, Republicans have secured 212 seats in the 435-member House, according to Edison Research, which predicted on Friday evening that Republican Jeff Hurd has sufficient support to maintain Republican control over Colorado's 3rd congressional district. Republicans need to capture six more seats to retain control of the House and already have enough victories to flip the U.S. Senate from Democratic to Republican control, although Edison Research forecasted late Friday that Democratic U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen has won reelection in Nevada.
With Trump's victory secured in the presidential election and Republican dominance over the Senate established, holding onto the House would provide Republicans the sweeping authority to potentially push through a broad agenda of tax cuts, spending reductions, energy deregulation, and enhanced border security measures. The outcome of 19 House races remains uncertain, primarily in competitive Western districts where vote counting traditionally proceeds at a slower rate than elsewhere in the nation.
