Lithuania's Contentious Coalition: Social Democrats Partner with Populists
Lithuania's Social Democrats formed a coalition with Nemunas Dawn, a populist party, despite its leader facing trial for alleged antisemitic behavior. Remigijus Zemaitaitis, head of Nemunas Dawn, has denied wrongdoing. The coalition, set to hold a parliamentary majority, is criticized internationally for the alliance.
Lithuania's Social Democrats, winners of the recent parliamentary election, have formed a coalition government with the populist Nemunas Dawn party. This decision has sparked controversy, as Nemunas Dawn's leader, Remigijus Zemaitaitis, is currently on trial for alleged antisemitic statements made via social media.
Zemaitaitis, who resigned from parliament in April to avoid an impeachment vote, faces charges of attempting to incite hostility and downplaying the Holocaust. Although denying any wrongdoing, Zemaitaitis will not take a cabinet position, though his party will lead three ministries, including Justice.
The coalition move has drawn criticism from international figures, such as U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and German parliamentarian Michael Roth, who argue it clashes with core democratic values. Despite this, designated Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas insists the coalition is necessary for a stable government.
