Aditya Golay, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) candidate for the Soreng-Chakung constituency, secured an uncontested victory in the by-elections. The constituency was set for elections on November 13 but saw a twist when the nomination of Citizen Action Party candidate Pobin Hang Subba was rejected, followed by the withdrawal of Sikkim Democratic Front candidate Prem Bahadur Bhandari.
Addressing the media from his residence in Soreng, Golay expressed that SKM was confident of his uncontested win. Although he aimed to surpass the previous record set by party president Prem Singh Golay with 10,480 votes, circumstances led to a different outcome. Golay emphasized a future focus on breaking electoral records and ensuring continued development for Soreng-Chakung.
Golay noted Bhandari's withdrawal as an individual stance due to his shared origins in the same village, suggesting potential alignment with SKM's developmental goals. He also addressed accusations from CAP's Pobin Hang Subba regarding alleged 'kidnappings' by SKM, highlighting the transparent and independent actions of the election commission. Looking forward, Golay aims to prioritize youth engagement as part of his development agenda.
With SKM's previous capture of 31 out of 32 assembly seats, Aditya's uncontested victory maintains their grip ahead of the 2024 general elections. The Namchi Singhithang constituency still hangs in balance, with competition between SKM and SDF as CAP's candidate faced nomination rejection, presenting another political showdown.
