Meloni's Coalition Claims Victory in Liguria Amidst Tumultuous Political Landscape
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and her coalition celebrated yet another regional election victory in Liguria. Marco Bucci was elected president with a narrow win over the centre-left rival. This victory marks a mid-term boost for Meloni, reflecting a divided opposition and a noteworthy setback for the Democrats.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing coalition achieved another regional election victory in Liguria, as final results emerged on Tuesday. Conservative candidate Marco Bucci was elected president of the northwestern region, narrowly defeating centre-left competitor Andrea Orlando with 48.8% of the vote.
Meloni praised Bucci's triumph on social media, highlighting it as part of a series of regional wins. This success coincides with Meloni's celebration of her second year in office, where she maintains a solid lead in national opinion polls. Two additional regional elections are slated for next month.
The Liguria outcome dealt a blow to Italy's fragmented opposition, which sought to solidify an alliance between the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement. The election was prompted by the resignation of former conservative regional president Giovanni Toti, following his legal entanglement in a corruption case. Despite electoral setbacks, the PD emerged as Liguria's most popular party, although turnout was underwhelming at under 46%.
