Nine candidates filed their nomination papers on Thursday for upcoming bypolls in five assembly constituencies in Assam, according to an official statement. The Dholai assembly constituency saw four candidates, while Bongaigaon and Samaguri each had two candidates file documents. Sidli received one nomination.

No nominations were filed for the Behali constituency, the statement reported. Congress contender Tanzil Hussain, son of Dhubri Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain, was among the candidates who filed for Samaguri. The total nominations have now reached 14, the statement added.

Nirmal Kumar Brahma, a nominee of the ruling alliance partner UPPL, submitted his nomination for Sidli. The deadline for filing nominations is Friday, with scrutiny on October 28 and withdrawal deadline on October 30. The bypolls, required after sitting MLAs were elected to Lok Sabha earlier in the year, are scheduled for November 13.
