The Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASOM) finds itself navigating turbulent political waters as it appoints a new leader, Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan. This comes in the wake of state Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah stepping down due to tensions over seat-sharing arrangements.
ASOM, originally led by Congress in a coalition to oppose the BJP, has resolved to press on without Congress. Lurinjyoti Gogoi, ASOM's general secretary, announced the changes during a press briefing, emphasizing the alliance's determination to continue its political battle.
ASOM accused Congress of betrayal after it fielded a candidate in Behali, a seat promised to an ASOM ally. This has sparked a rift ahead of crucial bypolls in five Assembly constituencies, where ASOM aims to maintain unity against the ruling forces.
