Tensions are escalating within Assam's 16-party opposition alliance as disagreements surface over candidate selections for the impending Behali bypolls. Congress state president Bhupen Kumar Borah resigned from his position at the alliance's helm, citing immense pressure from the party's directive.
The crux of the disagreement centers on the alliance's nomination from Behali. As per predetermined agreements, the seat was allotted to CPI(ML) Liberation candidate Bibek Das, though internal factions within Congress preferred alternative candidates, leading to a rift in the bloc.
In response to these developments, ASOM leadership has issued Congress a deadline to clarify its candidate selection process. With bypoll nominations closing soon, the situation remains tense as parties race against the clock to finalize their strategies to challenge the ruling BJP.
