Violence has significantly escalated in Assam's Samaguri assembly constituency, days ahead of the crucial by-elections. Both ruling BJP and opposition Congress report gunshots aimed at each other's supporters, with police confirming ongoing investigations. The conflict resulted in attacks on three journalists, further intensifying the already charged atmosphere.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned Congress, accusing them of employing intimidation tactics against BJP workers. An alleged shooting incident targeting a vehicle carrying BJP MLA Jitu Goswami added to the tension, though no injuries were reported. Meanwhile, clashes led to considerable damage to vehicles from both parties' supporters.
The by-election scenario became even more fraught as Congress candidate Tanzil Hussain's campaign vehicle reportedly faced an attack. The situation called for complaints to the Election Commission, with local Congress leaders demanding restraint on campaign activities and action against the alleged perpetrators. The electoral battle is set for November 13, with vote counting scheduled for November 23.
