Albania's ex-President Ilir Meta was detained by police amid corruption allegations, his lawyer and spokesperson announced. The arrest spurred criticism from Meta's camp, with spokesperson Tedi Blushi labeling it as "inappropriate" and predicting it will be widely denounced by patriotic Albanians.
Footage reportedly showed police halting a black vehicle, with Meta resisting arrest. The Special Prosecution Office against Corruption (SPAK) has not commented on the situation, although Tirana-based outlets suggest charges of corruption and money laundering. Meta denies the charges, according to his lawyer, Genci Gjokutaj.
The move has heightened political tensions, echoing previous actions against the opposition Democratic Party. Recent protests have unfolded after their member, Ervin Salianji, faced politically charged sentencing, mirroring earlier accusations against their former leader, Sali Berisha.
