Moldovans headed to the polls on Sunday for two significant votes that could shape the country's future alignment with the European Union, amid allegations of Russian meddling. The presidential race sees incumbent Maia Sandu as the frontrunner among 11 candidates, while a pivotal referendum seeks to solidify the nation's pro-EU stance in its constitution.

The Chisinau-based WatchDog think-tank reports that over 50 percent of the electorate supports the EU path, with the referendum needing at least one-third turnout to be legitimate. Polls opened at 7 am local time and will close at 9 pm.

Should Sandu not achieve a direct win, a run-off is set for November 3 against Russia-friendly candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo, currently polling at 10 percent. Amid these high-stakes elections, Moldova's government asserts that Russia has intensified efforts to destabilize the nation through funding opposition, spreading disinformation, and orchestrating vote-buying schemes. Despite Moscow's denials, U.S. security officials echo these concerns, highlighting the significant impact of Russian financial influence in Moldova's elections.
