The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has experienced a major electoral defeat in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory assembly elections. The regional party managed to win only three seats, marking a stark reduction from the 28 seats it held in 2014.
Out of 873 candidates running for the 90 available assembly seats, an overwhelming 76.28% forfeited their deposits, contributing upwards of Rs 1.60 crore to the Election Commission of India. The PDP stood out by fielding the most candidates, with many suffering losses.
The election results underscore a shift in the region's political landscape, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing 29 seats despite some candidates losing their deposits. Prominent figures like Sajad Gani Lone and Muzaffar Hussain Baig were among those impacted by this political upheaval.
