In a bold move, South Sudanese lawyers have taken legal action against President Salva Kiir's postponement of the country's elections and the extension of the transitional government's term by two years.

The decision, finalized late last week by parliament after cabinet endorsement, was met with strong opposition. On Monday, the legal team approached the Supreme Court to contest the delay, calling it "unconstitutional" and "illegal."

International guarantors of South Sudan's peace expressed disappointment over the development, viewing it as a failure to implement the 2018 peace plan. South Sudan has seen continued violence despite a formal peace agreement ending a five-year conflict in 2018.
