China's top security official visited Tibet last week, urging a stronger crackdown against separatists as the US increased its support for the region by enacting a new law. This move presses Beijing to engage in talks with the Dalai Lama.
Chen Wenqing, head of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, toured the Tibet Autonomous Region and reviewed security measures. He called for a resolute crackdown against separatists, urging local officials to maintain stability and counteract independence efforts.
This visit coincides with heightened security in Tibet ahead of China's 75th anniversary of the People's Republic on October 1. US legislation, signed by President Joe Biden in July, aims to promote dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama, pressing for negotiations without preconditions. China has denounced the legislation as destabilizing and lodged a formal protest with the US following a key Biden administration official's meeting with the Dalai Lama.
