Alberto Fujimori, the controversial former President of Peru, has died at the age of 86. Fujimori, whose presidency from 1990 to 2000 brought significant economic reforms and an end to a vicious insurgency, reshaped Peru's political landscape. However, his tenure was tarnished by autocratic methods and widespread corruption.
Fujimori's death was announced by his daughter, Keiko Fujimori, on social media. Pardoned in December, the former president had plans to run for a fourth term in 2026. He first gained prominence by defeating Mario Vargas Llosa in the 1990 elections and later became known for his bold economic policies and authoritarian governance.
Despite his achievements, Fujimori's downfall began with leaked tapes of his spy chief bribing lawmakers, eventually leading to his exile and later extradition. His conviction made him the first former president to be tried for human rights violations in his country. Fujimori's complex legacy continues to evoke mixed feelings among Peruvians.
