China-Taiwan Tensions: Beijing’s 'Separatist' Email Tipoffs Under Fire
China announced it would review email tipoffs related to Taiwan 'separatist' activity, claiming to target a small minority. Taiwan rebukes this as a lie and asserts the rights of its people. The email system has sparked controversy, with both sides accusing each other of deceit and intimidation.
China's government announced on Wednesday that it would carefully scrutinize email tipoffs related to alleged Taiwan 'separatist' activities. The announcement follows through on Beijing's previous threats against those it accuses of separatism, adding an email address in August for people to report such activities.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, assured that the measures target only a small minority, emphasizing that good people have nothing to worry about. He noted public support from both sides of the Taiwan Straits as reflective of common aspirations and assured rigorous verification processes.
Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, however, dismissed Beijing's reassurances as false. They urged mainland China to stop intimidating the Taiwanese populace and condemned the campaign as overly broad. Taiwan's government reiterated that only its people can decide their future and warned against non-essential travel to China due to rising tensions.
