Diplomatic Rift: Venezuelan Embassy Revocation Sparks Tensions
Venezuela has revoked Brazil's authorization to represent Argentine interests in the country, citing alleged assassination plots. Brazil and Argentina have condemned the move and urged adherence to diplomatic norms. The issue has escalated, with the Argentine embassy housing six opposition figures facing surveillance and power cuts.
Venezuela has withdrawn Brazil's authorization to represent Argentine interests within its borders, claiming it has evidence of assassination plans targeting top officials, including President Nicolas Maduro. This decision disrupts the embassy where six opposition members currently seek asylum.
Brazil expressed 'surprise' at this development, while Argentina outright rejected Venezuela's unilateral action. Both nations have called upon Maduro to honor the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations. They warned that any hostile actions against asylum seekers inside the embassy would spark international outcry, highlighting ongoing human rights concerns in Venezuela.
Despite Venezuela's decision, Brazil stated it would continue defending Argentine interests until an alternative arrangement is found. The situation intensified as opposition figures inside the Argentine residence in Caracas reported surveillance and power outages. The crisis stems from claims that six individuals sought refuge after being charged with conspiracy, accusations denied by opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
