Donald Trump's legal team will petition a federal appeals court on Friday to overturn a $5 million jury verdict that found him liable for sexually assaulting and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. The Republican presidential nominee is expected to attend the oral arguments before the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan.

The appeal follows a May 2023 civil verdict stemming from an alleged mid-1990s incident involving Carroll, as well as a 2022 social media post where Trump denied the allegations. Jurors awarded Carroll $2.02 million for the sexual assault claim and $2.98 million for defamation.

In a separate January case, another jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million for defamation. Trump is appealing both verdicts. Judge Lewis Kaplan oversaw the trials and allowed testimony from two other women accusing Trump of similar misconduct. Trump denies knowing Carroll and claims her accusations are politically motivated.
