The Himachal Pradesh Assembly passed a bill on Wednesday that revokes pension benefits for defected MLAs, marking a significant legislative move. State Minister Vikramaditya Singh asserted that the bill is intended to deter future defections and carries no political agenda.
Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu explained that the amendment targets MLAs disqualified by the Assembly Speaker, aiming to fortify democratic processes. According to him, the legislation serves as a stern lesson for those contemplating party betrayal for political gains, thereby supporting the anti-defection law.
Introduced by CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Allowances and Pensions) Amendment Bill 2024 faced opposition scrutiny, who claimed it was politically driven. Despite this, the bill was passed by voice vote, impacting six Congress MLAs disqualified on February 28 for violating the party whip.
