About 20 migrants are believed to be missing after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean this week, the UN refugee agency reported on Wednesday.
Seven Syrians were rescued and brought to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, according to the Italian coast guard.
Chiara Cardoletti, the UNHCR representative to Italy, announced on X that the seven survivors are "in critical conditions and many have lost their relatives.'' Survivors recounted that they had departed from Libya on September 1, and the incident occurred a day into their voyage, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
Survivors reported that 20 individuals are missing, including three children.
