Germany's opposition Conservatives have gained a narrow lead over the far-right in the recent election in the eastern state of Saxony, according to an exit poll by broadcaster ZDF.

The Christian Democrats (CDU), who have ruled Saxony since reunification over 30 years ago, appeared poised to capture 32% of the vote, marginally down from the 32.1% they secured in 2019.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) followed closely at 31.5%, advancing from 27.5% in the previous election. The populist newcomer, Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), secured the third spot, garnering 11.5% of the vote. Another exit poll from broadcaster ARD showed the conservatives with a slightly larger lead.
