In a significant political development, several leaders and workers joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) at its headquarters in Srinagar, with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti welcoming them. Mufti criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its manipulation of election dates and expressed hope for a free and fair election.
Earlier, Mehbooba Mufti took a swipe at National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, alleging that elections become favorable for NC only when they are in power and unfavorable when they lose. She accused the NC of political convenience, citing instances of irregularities during the 1987 polls.
National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah defended his decision to contest the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. He emphasized the need for a united front against the BJP. The elections will be held in three phases starting on September 18, marking the first assembly polls since the abrogation of Article 370.
