The Meghalaya Police have recovered the decomposed body of Awami League leader Ishaque Ali Khan Panna from a betelnut plantation in Jaintia Hills district near the India-Bangladesh border.
The discovery was made on the evening of August 26, approximately 1.5 km from the border. SP Giri Prasad confirmed that Panna's identity was confirmed through his passport.
Panna, a former general secretary of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and a key figure in the Awami League from Pirojpur district, had been evading capture since the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5. The body has been transported to Khliehriat Civil Hospital for further identification. Initial reports suggest Panna may have died from a cardiac arrest while attempting to cross the border, though there are conflicting reports of a possible shooting incident involving the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
