Amid claims by the Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Police of potential disruptions, student organisation Chhatra Samaj has insisted that their August 27 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally will be conducted peacefully. The rally focuses on demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the arrest of those responsible for the rape and murder of a doctor in R G Kar hospital.
Chhatra Samaj spokesperson Sayan Lahiri addressed the media on Monday, dismissing the disruptive claims. 'We aim to raise our demands peacefully. If stopped, we will proceed to the state secretariat in a non-violent manner to demand the CM's resignation due to her failure to prevent incidents like the RG Kar case,' Lahiri stated. The rally will begin from College Square, Fort William, and Santragachhi at noon, moving towards Nabanna. Organised by an apolitical platform with no affiliations to BJP, RSS, or ABVP, Lahiri emphasised that law enforcement has been notified multiple times similarly denying any illegality.
West Bengal additional director-general and inspector-general of police, Manoj Verma, indicated that no permissions were sought for the rally at the state secretariat, marking it as a restricted area. The police, concerned about potential law and order issues, have taken precautionary measures ahead of the march.
