Biden Pushes Gaza Ceasefire as Negotiations Intensify in Cairo
President Joe Biden engaged with leaders of Qatar and Egypt, advocating for a Gaza ceasefire-for-hostages deal. Discussions in Cairo, described as 'constructive,' continue with the involvement of U.S. and other key negotiators. Intensifying efforts aim to address Israel's security interests and ensure Hamas's participation.
President Joe Biden has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure a Gaza ceasefire by engaging in phone calls with the leaders of Qatar and Egypt. His discussions focused on removing the final roadblocks to a ceasefire-for-hostages deal.
A White House statement confirmed Biden spoke with Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, emphasizing the importance of concluding the ceasefire and hostage release agreement. Biden is monitoring the negotiations closely while on vacation in California's Santa Ynez valley.
Meanwhile, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby indicated that talks in Cairo are progressing positively, with CIA Director Bill Burns and U.S. Middle East envoy Brett McGurk representing Washington. Despite the constructive nature of the discussions, further negotiations are needed, particularly with Hamas militants, who have yet to engage fully.
