Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, a Republican supported by former President Donald Trump, has exited the race for Alaska's lone US House seat after securing the third position in this week's primary.

With Dahlstrom stepping aside, Republican Nick Begich emerges as the principal contender against Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola, the first Alaska Native in Congress.

The primary featured 12 candidates in an open format where voters could choose any candidate, moving the top four forward to the ranked choice general election. Early results show Peltola in the lead, followed by Begich and then Dahlstrom. It remains undetermined who the fourth candidate will be.

The Alaska Division of Elections has yet to clarify whether the fifth-place candidate will advance to the general election. Attempts to contact the division via email and phone have not been answered as of Friday.
