Democratic Lawmakers Accept Increased Donations from Major Food Companies Amid Rising Prices

Political donations from major food companies to Democratic lawmakers have surged in the current election cycle, despite the party's vocal criticism of these companies for escalating food prices. A Reuters analysis of Federal Election Commission data shows increased contributions even as Democrats accuse grocers and suppliers of exploiting consumers.

Between 2019 and 2023, food prices soared by 25%. With the economy being a top voter concern, many Democrats have heightened their scrutiny of corporate practices, particularly following Kroger's proposed $24.6 billion merger with Albertsons. The Federal Trade Commission is set to challenge the deal in an Oregon federal court, arguing it could harm shoppers and workers.

Noteworthy contributions include Albertsons' PAC, which has tripled its donations to $291,500, and Kroger's PAC, which has also increased its contributions. Despite criticizing corporate greed, at least 154 Democratic lawmakers have accepted donations from top food companies. Among them are vulnerable senators like Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey, and Tammy Baldwin, who have received significant contributions from these companies.
