Senior CPI(M) leader M Y Tarigami on Thursday expressed his approval of the newly announced National Conference-Congress pre-poll alliance for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, labeling it a crucial step forward.

The alliance was unveiled by NC president Farooq Abdullah following a discussion with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Malikarjun Kharge.

Speaking to reporters, Abdullah confirmed that Tarigami is included in the pre-poll alliance. 'We welcome Farooq Abdullah's declaration regarding the NC-Congress and CPI(M) coalition for the polls,' Tarigami stated in an interview with PTI.

Tarigami noted that the alliance is a significant development, necessary under the current circumstances and challenges people have been facing since the 2019 abrogation of Article 370, which led to the reorganization of the former state.

'It is imperative for secular parties to unite now and counter those in power who have dismantled the constitutional protections for J&K,' Tarigami said, adding the alliance aims to address the livelihood issues of the J&K populace.

He remarked that ordinary citizens have 'suffered tremendously' since the events of 2019, and emphasized that it is time to thwart the BJP regime's plans.
