George Santos, the scandal-ridden former U.S. congressman, has agreed to serve at least two years in prison as part of his guilty plea to fraud and identity theft charges, according to federal prosecutor Breon Peace. The agreement, which culminated recently, could see Santos facing up to 22 years behind bars.

Initially charged in May 2023, Santos exited Congress following revelations of fabricated fundraising figures and a falsified biography. Facing sentencing on February 7, the 36-year-old former representative has conceded to an eight-year sentence without appeal and admitted wrongdoing on 23 counts.

Prosecutor Peace underscored the importance of punishment in combating political corruption and restoring trust in government institutions. Despite challenging Supreme Court rulings limiting corruption charges, Peace affirmed his office's commitment to prosecuting public officials.
