NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Wednesday criticized the Maharashtra government for its handling of the Badlapur sexual abuse case and demanded Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's resignation, as he holds the home portfolio. Sule accused the Eknath Shinde-led administration of neglecting women's safety while being engrossed in political maneuvers.
This criticism came amid large-scale protests in Badlapur, Thane district, where residents blocked railway tracks and vandalized the school where two kindergarten girls were sexually abused by a school attendant last week. The protesters called for stringent punishment for the accused, who was apprehended on August 17.
In response, the state government ordered the suspension of three police officials for alleged negligence in investigating the case. Sule lambasted the education minister for inaction and questioned the delay in filing an FIR, asserting that the incident would have remained hidden without public agitation. She insisted that the Badlapur incident should have been handled with greater sensitivity to women's safety concerns.
