The BJP on Tuesday named senior party leader Kiran Choudhry as its nominee for the Haryana Rajya Sabha bypoll, marking a significant shift nearly two months after her transition from the Congress.
The need for the bypoll arose when Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak. Haryana Agriculture Minister Kanwar Pal announced Choudhry's nomination and stated she would file her papers on Wednesday.
Earlier that day, MLA Choudhry resigned from the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, a move confirmed by the assembly speaker. Choudhry, along with her daughter Shruti and supporters, joined the BJP in June. The Rajya Sabha elections will be held on September 3, with the last day to file nominations being Wednesday.
