Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to stop politicizing the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Sarma's comments came in response to Banerjee's accusations against opposition parties for allegedly inciting vandalism at the hospital on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday. Speaking at a BJP meeting, Sarma emphasized the need to focus on identifying those responsible for the tragic incident and holding them accountable.

"The Kolkata incident is very sad, and the entire country is in shock. Mamata didi should avoid politicizing this matter and concentrate on finding out who was behind it," Sarma remarked. He added that engaging in political accusations in the wake of such a tragedy is inappropriate. The crime, which occurred on August 9, led to the arrest of a civic volunteer the following day. Meanwhile, unidentified individuals vandalized the hospital, sparking midnight protests by women against the incident.
