The Indian Medical Association (IMA), representing the country's doctors, announced a nationwide shutdown of most departments, excluding essential services, for 24 hours starting Saturday morning. It marks the largest such strike in a decade. The IMA highlighted the vulnerability of especially female doctors to violence and urged authorities to enhance safety measures on campuses and hospitals.

Political parties and celebrities, including Bollywood actors, expressed shock and demanded stricter punishments for offenders. The BJP, in opposition in West Bengal, planned protests in Kolkata. A police volunteer at the hospital has been arrested and charged with the crime, further highlighting the need for proper protection and facilities for medics.

The Indian government enacted significant changes to the criminal justice system following the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, introducing tougher sentences. However, campaigners argue that despite these changes, the situation remains largely unchanged.
