Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has informed his governing party executives that he will not run in the forthcoming party leadership vote scheduled for September. This decision effectively means that Japan will welcome a new prime minister. Public broadcaster NHK and other media outlets reported the news.

Elected as president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in 2021, Kishida's tenure is set to expire in September. His withdrawal from the leadership race determines that the new leader emerging from the party vote will automatically become the next prime minister of Japan, as the LDP holds a majority in both houses of parliament.

Kishida's decision comes amidst declining support, exacerbated by a series of corruption scandals within his party. Recent polls indicate his approval ratings have plummeted to below 20%, reflecting growing public discontent.
