Former BJP MLA Ashok Sarma has formally joined Congress, accompanied by hundreds of his supporters. The senior BJP figure made this shift during a joining programme attended by top Congress leaders including Gaurav Gogoi and Bhupen Kumar Borah.

'Today marks the start of the Quit India movement, and I chose this day to join Congress to honor the sacrifices of the party and its leaders,' Sarma declared to a packed audience.

He explained that his departure from BJP was a difficult decision, influenced by the party's divisive politics and internal satisfaction. Sarma's move is expected to create significant ripples within the BJP, especially in Assam's lower districts.
