Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has fled to India following weeks of deadly protests that forced her resignation. Her return hinges on the decision of a new caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, to hold elections.

Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, currently based in the U.S., disclosed to the Times of India daily that his mother is waiting for the interim government to announce an election date. Joy did not confirm whether Hasina, aged 76, will contest in the forthcoming elections.

Hasina and her Awami League party are absent from the interim government, which comes after a violent student-led uprising that resulted in about 300 deaths and thousands of injuries. While Hasina shelters in a New Delhi safe house, reports suggest she may seek asylum in Britain, pending official comments from the British Home Office.
