Diplomatic Rift: Brazil and Nicaragua Relations on the Edge

Brazil is bracing for the expulsion of its ambassador from Nicaragua, set to happen on Thursday, a move that may prompt reciprocal action from the Brazilian government, according to an official source.

The decision by Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega follows prior threats and comes amid deteriorating ties largely exacerbated by Venezuela's disputed election. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been critical of the election process, especially the lack of publicly disclosed results.

Nicaragua's impending expulsion decision follows the Brazilian ambassador's absence from the 45th anniversary celebrations of the Sandinista revolution last month, which ignited tensions. The diplomatic strain has been ongoing since Lula's failed attempt to negotiate the release of a prominent Catholic bishop critical of Ortega. Consequently, Brazil's foreign ministry has maintained only essential diplomatic relations with Nicaragua.
